Several companies are offering affordable digital frames now, among them Digital Foci, Digital Spectrum, Fidelity Electronics, Kodak, Pandigital, Smartparts and Westinghouse, all of which showed their wares at PMA 2007. Pandigital sent us a review unit before the show (where we met with them), on which this report is based. Smartparts, for its part, has developed simplified transfer software to copy images into its frame's internal memory. The company also offers telephone support.

While the hardware used by each of these companies seems to come from just a few sources, the software is home grown. Westinghouse, for example, can simultaneously display two images and, with its MosaicView technology, show three images on the screen at the same time. Fidelity is developing small format LCD frames to replace those family photos on your office credenza as well as larger ones designed to be used in store windows. And Digital Spectrum has a Vista-ready wireless frame that can display images in your My Pictures directory. Kodak's EasyShare digital picture frames also have wireless support and add PictBridge printing capability as well.
ScanSnap Home combines all your favorite functions into one and is the ultimate platform to utilize scanned data in various ways. Easily manage, edit and utilize data from documents, business cards, receipts and photos with the software. You can scan large volumes of various types of documents from color photos to double-sided landscape documents with a host of intelligent automatic image processing functions.
ScanSnap Cloud delivers scanned data directly from your ScanSnap iX100 to your favorite cloud services without a computer or mobile device. The software automatically classifies your file type by documents, receipts, business cards and photos, and sends it to the appropriate cloud based on your pre-set profiles.
If the problem continues, you have no choice but agree to initialize the disk you inserted, as the pop-up warns. Care about important data? Download and install EaseUS Mac data recovery software on your Mac because this fix will bring data loss to the storage device.
Software and the Lack of ItThe PanScn06 comes without any application software. However, it offers a utility stored on the SD card that you can install to let you scan directly to your hard disk over a USB connection. Basically this saves the step of copying the files manually, but is otherwise completely equivalent to scanning to memory and then copying the files later.
Beyond the scan utility, there simply wasn't any software to test. I've often suggested in reviews that it's the software that gives a scanner its personality, since the software defines what the package can do. In this case, the PanScn06's personality comes from its lack of software, which defines the scanner as supremely easy to use.
Unfortunately, the lack of software also makes it pointless to test scanning anything besides photos. There's nothing to stop you from scanning business cards or text documents, for example, but how accurate the results will be will depend on the interaction between the scanner and the particular business card or optical character recognition program (OCR) you use. That makes testing pointless, since my results could be very different from yours if you use a different program.
Photo ScanningThe lack of software doesn't create problems for testing photo scan quality, because the scanner itself determines the quality. You can look at the results with any program you like.
In the meantime, we Pandigital needs to upgrade the software (and possibly some of the components) of the Novel before it's worth recommending. For now, however, the Novel's a good idea that just needs to be fleshed out better. 2ff7e9595c
